Explaining How Presidential Voting Works For Non-Americans

equatorgrim:

In the United States, we have voting based on a process called the electoral college.  Each state gets a number based off their population.  (So states like California, Florida, and Texas have larger numbers than Alaska or North Dakota)

  • The total number  is  538.
  • The least number a state can get is 3.

When we vote, we vote on which person our State’s electoral vote goes to.  So if the majority of the people in California vote for Obama, then Obama gets 55 electoral votes

  • A president must have at least 270 electoral votes to become president.

Really, the amount of states that vote for a president does not matter, more states could vote for one person, but if fewer states with more electoral numbers votes for another, they win.

Does that make sense?
